Speaking to MiD DAY, Deshmukh said that based on the reference of Mumbai police, he extended Dutt’s parole citing his wife Maanayata’s ill health.

The actor had earlier been granted a 14-day medical furlough in the beginning of October, which was extended further by another 14 days on health grounds.

He was at his Mumbai home all of October and returned to prison on October 30.

However, within two months, Dutt again got parole for a brief period of one month, which was supposed to expire today.

“The Mumbai police had told me that they checked the reality of the situation and after confirming it with Maanayata’s doctor, police referred Dutt’s parole application for the extension of another 30 days,” Deshmukh added. Deshmukh is the sanctioning authority to grant parole or furlough to jail inmates in five districts including Pune.

Maanayata was admitted to a private hospital in suburban Mumbai earlier this month after she was diagnosed with a tumour in her liver.
