"It wasn't me," kept saying the youth wanted for attempt to murder, "it was my identical twin." Finally, after managing to escape the law for a year with the same story, the police managed to outsmart Guru Swamy Nadar (22) and arrest him on Wednesday. Officers got him to confess his real identity after they detained him and said he would be released only once his brother was arrested.

Nadar was wanted by the Malad police in a case of assault. The police had booked him under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code and had also deputed a team to arrest him. Nadar had attacked a person with a sharp weapon, critically injuring him. According to the police, the attack had been a fallout of some previous enmity between the two.
The smooth talker
"Every time the team visited Nadar's residence in Aarey colony, he would face the officers with complete confidence and mislead them, saying that the criminal they are looking for is his twin brother. He would tell them that his brother is currently untraceable, that he too has lost contact with him since the time of the case," said an officer.
The confidence with which the accused would narrate the story never left any room for doubt, said the police. It was the same story every single time, with the team returning empty-handed again and again.
Caught, at last!
Following the recent drive by the police to arrest all criminals and absconders, the crime branch was put on Nadar's tail. A team was formed and it started investigations. Crime branch unit IX officers said that when they too went knocking on his door, he used the "judwaa trump card" on them.
To outwit him, the officers detained Nadar and said that it had become very confusing for them to find his brother because of the fact that they were twins, and hence, they would set him free once they arrested the real culprit. An officer said, "We picked him up from Aarey and brought him to our office for interrogation. He was grilled non-stop for hours." After the sustained interrogation, he realised that he was trapped, and broke down and confessed that he was the culprit.
Disowned by the brother
Nadar told the police that he was a habitual offender and that his brother had disowned him for that very reason, because he didn't likes his activities. Hence, the latter had left Mumbai and shifted to his hometown. The accused had then decided to take advantage of the fact that they looked alike and disguised himself in his brother's name to avoid arrest. DCP (crime) Shashikant Sarav told mid-day, "Our officers had a specific tip-off about the accused. We arrested him and handed him over to the Malad police for further investigation."
