Man caught trying to smuggle 2-kg gold at international airport

A 40-year-old man who arrived in Mumbai from the Gulf was caught by officials at the Mumbai international airport for possessing gold bars illegally.

Arif Shaikh, who flew in from Dubai last morning by flight no EK-504, was held by officers from the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs wing at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport around 8.45 am.

Shaikh, who is suspected to be a member of a gold smuggling gang, was intercepted by officials while walking through the green channel without having declared any goods. On checking his luggage, the authorities found gold bars weighing two kg.

When he failed to satisfactorily answer their questions, he was arrested. The value of the seized gold is around Rs 52 lakh. Shaikh is a native of Kannur in Kerala.u00a0
