Four days after woman lodges complaint police yet to register FIR

Seema Lanke (32), lives under constant fear of her husband. She alleges that her husband, Nanabhau Lanke alias Prakash assaulted her often and the proof is the mark of her husband's name (Prakash) on her wrist, which he allegedly carved using a pocketknife. What's worse is that she also accuses the police of not filing an FIR immediately thereby delaying the entire investigation.

Ex-wife involved
Seema, a nurse, was separated from her husband for some months and was staying with her parents.u00a0 On December 12, she had gone to Yerawada for some work where she happened to meet her husband. He forcibly took her to their home. She also found Lanke's 12-year-old son from his previous marriage and his ex-wife Deepali at her place. She alleged that her 12-year-old stepson handed over a pocketknife to Lanke and also accused Lanke's ex-wife Deepali of holding her hand while Lanke carried on with the assault. The medical certificate by Sassoon General Hospital shows that there are 15 wounds all over her body.

Police unhelpful
After assaulting her, he locked her up inside her house in Vishrantwadi. But she managed to escape on December 16 and returned to her parents' house to tell the tale to her entire family. She approached Vishrantwadi police station and submitted a written application to them the same day. However, she says that the police have not taken adequate action against her husband. She said that she has to live under constant fear as her husband has threatened to kill her. She alleges that her husband assaulted her 15 times with a pocketknife and that the marks on her wrist are a proof of the same. She has also given a written application to DCP's (Zone IV) office.

She met him when she was unemployed and he promised him a job of a nurse. When she got a job, she also nursed him when he was sick.

Later she married him in a temple at Alandi on March 2009. She became aware of her husband's past marriage and criminal activities just three months after her marriage.

Reacting to police inaction against the victim's application DCP Sanjay Jadhav of Zone IV assured that he would look into the matter.

"We will see to it that an FIR is lodged after her statement is recorded," he said.u00a0 When MiD DAY approached the victim, she said she will approach the Vishrantwadi police station today.
