The victim, Jagruti Sawant, works as a beautician in a beauty parlour in Borivli (W). According to the police, she met the accused, Mayur Batawale via Facebook on August 17.

The two, who are both residents of different chawls in Kulupwadi in Borivli (West), had begun to chat online and later started dating. But only 20 days after knowing her, Batawale proposed to her and asked her to marry him. Sawant told him it was too early to take such a big step and declined. Disappointed, he called her several times, but she told him she was at work and was busy.

On Wednesday, when the victim was leaving her parlour with Puja Naik, her employer, Batawale approached them, saying he wished to speak to Sawant. He then slashed her chin with a shaving blade and fled from the spot. But hearing the women’s cries, passers-by alerted the marshals who were on duty.

“After attacking the girl, the accused tried to flee away from the spot. But the beat marshals quickly responded and nabbed the accused,” said N Khaire, senior inspector, Borivli police station. According to the police, the victim sustained 19 stitches on her chin. Her condition is now stable, but she is still in the ICU at Bhagwati Hospital. The accused was produced in Borivli court yesterday.
