The Pesi Shroff-trained Mathaiyus created a sensation by winning the Indian St Leger in record time at the Pune racetrack on Sunday. The Multidimensional - Yana four-year-old gelding was taken to the front soon after jump by jockey YS Srinath, after which, Mathaiyus made his own running all the way, getting stronger at the finish, decimating his rivals including the multi-Classic winner Temerity (Neeraj Rawal up). Mathaiyus set a new course record when he stopped the clock at 2 minutes 53.88 seconds, chopping off a clear 1.3 second from the old record that was set by An Acquired Taste four years ago.

"Great feeling"

"I feel great, and I am very happy for my horse," a beaming Mehernosh Deboo, owner of Mathaiyus, told mid-day in a post-race chat, "he was robbed of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the Indian Derby, so I am happy he has proved his class in this manner."

It may be noted that owner Mehernosh Deboo and breeder Ameeta Mehra of Usha stud, where Mathaiyus was bred, were extremely upset when Mathaiyus was withdrawn before coming under the starter's orders in the grade 1, Indian Derby on the first Sunday of February this year at the Mahalaxmi racecourse. Deboo wrote a letter complaining to the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) alleging unfair treatment to his horse who, in his opinion, had a great chance to win the Indian Derby. Strangely, the club neither held an inquiry nor wrote back to the owner, a fact which Deboo confirmed to mid-day yesterday.

Vindicated

"I always maintained Mathaiyus would have won the Indian Derby, and was very sad he was not allowed to run in the greatest race of his life due to some decision taken in haste," said Ameeta Mehra, who had bred Mathaiyus at her Usha stud farm, "today he (Mathaiyus) has proved I was right all along. He has silenced those detractors who had ridiculed us and made fun of him. I think Mathaiyus has just made a statement with his splendid performance, especially for those detractors."
