Iron rods that form the core of the pillars for city's metro line collapse just 2 days after Delhi's metro accident that killed 6 people

Last night added another chapter to the country's metro mishap sagas.

Just two days after a section of the elevated track at the Delhi Metro construction site collapsed, killing six people, a large number of iron rods fell at Mumbai's Metro rail project site on Andheri-Kurla road around 10.45 pm.

The huge rods form the core of the concrete pillars. Luckily, no traffic on the otherwise busy section of the road in Chakala saved lives and the face of officials who repeatedly promised that they were taking all safety measures.

Satish Sahai, an eyewitness said, "It was raining heavily.

I was heading home to Ghatkopar on my bike, when there were a huge thud a few metres behind me. I looked behind and realised how lucky I was."

Local corporator Subhash Sawant alleged that the officials of the Mumbai Metro rail project had not taken enough security measures despite him warning them.

He claimed there wasn't a single supervisor or security guard at the site when the mishap took place.

"I have raisedu00a0 the safety issue with the concerned authorities and asked them to stop work during the rains.

If the work continues in the monsoon even after this, we will be forced to stage a protest to voice our demands."

K P Maheshwari, director, Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), said, "The scaffolding gave way due to heavy rains and strong winds. We will have to investigate the matter, as the other iron pipes are still standing strong."

Maheshwari personally supervised the clearing work, which took nearly two hours.
