Expect a mad rush at Rangsharda as MHADA hands over 2,400 passes for live lottery among 4.27 lakh applicantsu00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0

Around 4.27 lakh Mumbaikars have their eyes set on the Rangsharda Auditorium, Bandra, today. they will be hoping that their names appear among the 3,863 lucky winners of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority's (MHADA) subsidised scheme to be announced today. And chaos seems to be the order of the day. While lakhs are expected to throng the hall, not more than 2,400 applicants will be able to see the lottery live.

The auditorium has a seating capacity of 800, of which 200 seats will be occupied by MHADA officials alone. The results will be announced in four sessions over a period of two hours each. Having distributed only 2,400 passes to the lottery on first-come-first-serve basis, MHADA officialsu00a0 say they are prepared for the hordes.

They have installed an LCD screen in a pandal erected outside the hall, which can house up to 800 people.

"The pandal can house more than 800 people and the hall has a capacity of 600, for which we have already issued passes. If there are more people pouring in, they should be able to catch all the action on the LCD screen," said Vaishali Sandansingh, PRO, MHADA.

Gone in 33 seconds

While space is one problem, another drawback is that the LCD screen won't flash the numbers of the applicants for more than 33 seconds. "We have to announce 3,863 lucky draws in around 10 hours. It's not possible to keep the numbers on the screen for more than 33 seconds," added Sandansingh.

On their guard

To control the crowds, the police department as well as the MHADA authorities have beefed up security in and around Rangsharda. Arvind Sawant, police inspector, Bandra police station, said, "We have posted nearly 50 policemen at the hall and the nearby premises."

N Chintamani, deputy director, MHADA, added, "Apart from the police bandobast, MHADA has also deployed nearly 100 private security guards."u00a0u00a0

Results online
The good news is that unlike previous lotteries, MHADA won't take more than three days for the allotment papers. The results will be posted on the MHADA's official website https://mhada.maharashtra.gov.in/ by evening.u00a0

I was keen to see the lottery 'live', but keeping the arrangements in mind, the situation is expected to be chaotic. I will stay away.u00a0
