Heavy rain disrupts everyday schedule; claims two lives and injures one


Heavy rain lashed the city around 8 pm yesterday resulting in water-logging, wall-collapse and snail pace traffic at various places in the city.

According to the fire brigade department, the worst affected areas were Pashan, Aundh, Baner, Model Colony, Vidhati Basti, Kothrud, Law College Road, Silver Screen Society, Khadki and Laxmi Road.

Wall collapse
The rear wall of National Chemical Laboratory at Pashan collapsed around 10.30 pm causing two deaths and injuring a person. The two deceased Hari Das (30) and Shabhok Mandal (30) were declared dead at Sahyadri Hospital, Kothrud. Prashant Maal (25) who suffered serious injuries was shifted to Sassoon hospital around midnight.

Sheikh Mubarak, on-duty fire brigade official said around 2.30 am, "We still have officials stationed there who are taking care of the situation. The roads are submerged in rain water so it's very difficult to clear the spot."u00a0u00a0u00a0

Waiting patiently
The stretch from Aundh road to Baner had students, office goers and families stuck in traffic waiting till midnight to reach home as the Ram Nadi nallah was overflowing. Police officials said, "Two bikes have flown away so we suggested to commuters not to take the risk of crossing the road."

Houses submerged
The Bidhati basti near Spicer Higher Secondary School was completely submerged in water. Home to almost 500 families, the slums were submerged in water till wee hours. Three army vehicles were also stuck at the water-logging site for almost three hours.
