BENGALI FLAVOUR

Calcutta Club is a home away from home for the Bengali bunch living in the city. WHAT's ON dropped in and found that the food is worth it, even if you are not a pukka Bong

We were apprehensive when we heard that Calcutta Club, a small eatery in Oshiwara, boasts of serving authentic Bengali cuisine. Because our last few trips to "authentic" places have yielded unsatisfactory results. But this hole-in-the-wall eatery proved us wrong as it made us feel right at home.

Ambience: Is cosy and comfortable. The walls are lined with black and white framed photographs of Bengal's sweethearts including Aparna Sen, Amartya Sen and of course, Rabindranath Tagore.

Food: Now, this is the section where this restaurant really scores. The menu is extensive and offers some of Bengal's most loved dishes including Rui Machher Jhaal and some lesser known ones like the Chitol Machher Muitha, which is basically minced fish steamed with spices and served as cakes. We ordered the Fish with Mustard Gravy (Rs 90), the Shukto, a light, mixed veg curry (Rs 65), traditional Bengali style Mutton Kausha (Rs 130), and the Jhaal Murgi (Rs 85). The fish scored the highest points, it was well cooked with perfect balance of flavours. The Jhaal Murgi, chicken cooked in black pepper, though spicy was easy on the stomach. The Mutton Kausha was succulent, while the Shukto was an ideal vegetarian accompaniment. Though the quantities may look less in the small bowls they are served in, but they are ideal for a meal for two.

Service: The staff is polite and prompt. The order was taken right away and the food came in steaming hot soon after. But be ready to wait, as this place has a long waiting list.

At: Shop no 22, Oshiwara Link Plaza, Next to Shreejee, Jogeshwari (W).
