Prashant Mirkar and skipper Kane Simoes displayed their class by scoring a goal apiece as Sacred Heart (Santacruz) defeated rivals St Francis D'Assisi 'B' (Borivli) 2-0 in a Division III clash of the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA)-organised U-16 inter-school football tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.

Both teams started with great momentum. However, it was Sacred Heart who got the better of St Francis D'Assisi, who were silent during most of the match, hardly showing any intent.

Within 10 minutes, the Santacruz side opened their account when right winger Prashant, who received the ball on the far left side, made a dash to the opposition territory and hammered it in. The ball hit the bottom left corner of the post, but that didn't stop the energetic Prashant from belting it into the net.

The second half of the game was no different. Sacred Heart were searching for more goals and stamped their authority in the match. St Francis D'Assisi were gifted an open chance, but goalkeeper Aditya Singh promptly made a save.

Kane shows his class
Ten minutes before regulation time, mid-fielder Kane fired a shot in from the opposition's corner, which eventually got right into the net.

After travelling three hours from Kandivli to the Azad Maidan ground yesterday, Thakur VM (Kandivli) were left without playing a Division III MSSA U-16 game match as their opponents Gyan Kendre (Andheri) did not turn up. The Kandivli side got a walkover, which is now the second one in two days. What annoyed Thakur VM even more was that their opposition didn't even inform the authorities that were unable to play.

MSSA fines absent teams
Taking serious note of teams skipping matches, the MSSA has decided to impose a fine of R2000 to teams who don't show up.
Meanwhile, in another Division III match, Cambridge 'A' (Kandivli) beat RN Podar (Santacruz) 3-1. Ankit L scored a brace, while Varun Singh scored a goal for the Kandivli team. In the next encounter, CNM (Vile Parle) beat Our Lady of Health (Sahar) 1-0. Vidhit Vohra scored for CNM. Gokulgam (Goregaon) and St. Joseph (Juhu) shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
