At 5.15 pm, 20-year-old Swara Pathak is approached by a man on a motorcycle as she is heading home to Milap Nagar, Dombivli, after collecting her results from Model College. Illustrations/Uday Mohite

The man tries to snatch her chain and her bag, but she struggles and refuses to let go. In the midst of the struggle, the attacker realises that the gold chain is a fake.
Enraged that all his effort has been for nothing, the accused removes the blade he is carrying in his mouth and uses it to slash the victim, loosening her grip. He then flees with the chain and the bag.
Swara screams throughout the ordeal, but no one comes to her aid. She finally takes a rickshaw home, where her mother treats her wound and then takes her to the Tilak Nagar police station to file a complaint.
