The attack took place on the family of three at Iraniwadi Dargah Scootor colony in Malad early on Tuesday. Chandan Singh, wife Chandni and their four-year-old son suffered serious burn injuries, and are admitted in Shatabdi hospital
It was a painful wake-up for a family of three after an unknown person crept into their shanty in Malad in the early hours of yesterday and flung acid on all of them.
Chandan Singh (32), wife Chandni (28), and their four-year-old son Adarsh have been admitted to Kandivli’s Shatabdi hospital with serious burn injuries — Chandan sustained 70 per cent burns, Chandni 40 per cent and the boy 30 to 40 per cent.
Police sources said the incident occurred between 2 am and 3 am at Iraniwadi Dargah Scootor colony. The three woke up screaming and ran out of their hutment, causing commotion in the area with neighbours rushing out too. They then took the family to the hospital and called the police.
Chandan was working in a bangle-making workshop. Inquiry revealed that a couple of days ago there had been a heated argument between workshop owner Rafique Morab and Chandan over a 40-year-old female employee. Chandan had alleged that even after working there for 15 years, instead of giving preference to him, Morab was being biased towards the woman.
Morab allegedly suspected that Chandan and a few other workers had been doing work for some othe parties for the last few months without informing him, and taking the money directly from them.
Based on Chandan’s complaint, the Dindoshi police have registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the case. Morab and the female employee have been detained.
Deputy commissioner of police (zone XII) Kirankumar Chavan said, “The reason and motive is yet not clear. We have registered a case and are investigating.”
