After a newborn died in a Govandi hospital as the management refused to accept old currency notes of Rs 500, an FIR was filed against the doctor in charge, Dr Sheetal Kamath, on Saturday at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahaji Umap, told mid-day, “As per the statement given by the family, we have registered a case under section 304A and 188 of IPC at Shivaji Nagar Police station. Further investigation is on.” The FIR was filed based on the statement given by the parents’ of the newborn.

Govandi’s Jeevan Jyot Hospital and Nursing Home refused to accept old currency notes from the newborn’s parents, instead demanding a deposit of Rs 6,000 in denominations of Rs 100. The parents managed to pay Rs 4,500 in denominations of R100 and requested for more time to arrange the remaining Rs 1,500 in the same denominations. However, the hospital authorities refused to wait, even as the baby’s condition continued to worsen and eventually, he died while being taken to another doctor in Chembur.

Dr Kamath, however, denied the allegation. In a statement, she said that the patient had a home delivery, and delivered a 1.5-kg baby in her bathroom on November 9. “I don’t have NICU (neonatal intensive care) facilities, so I gave a letter referring the baby and the mother to Sion Hospital. They probably took the baby home and waited for the condition of the baby to worsen,” read her statement.
