The vigilance squad of the licence department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has caught hold of a culprit who has been storing hazardous chemicals on his premises illegally

Mumbai: Illegal printing press raided for storing hazardous chemicals

A tip-off received by the informers of a few vigilance inspectors helped the squad seize 650 litres of hazardous chemicals from Ghatkopar on Thursday.

The culprit ran a printing press illegally in Narayan Nagar at Ghatkopar (west). Eagle Printing press owner Kaifaytullah Khan (54) has been arrested by the Ghatkopar police. About 450 litres of ethyl acetate and 200 litres of toluene were seized. Five drums with these chemicals were stored in 700 square feet of the premises.

These chemicals are highly inflammable and one needs special permissions from the BMC and a No Objection Certificate from the fire department to store them. The Eagle printing press did not have any permits. A vigilance inspector present during the raid, on condition of anonymity, said, “We have been chasing this man and keeping an eye on his shop for almost 17 days. Finally, with the help of the police we caught him.

We usually don’t give permissions to store such chemicals and a licence is given only after getting permissions from the fire department. The number of chemical factories has gone down in the city so it has become easier to catch those who store such chemicals illegally.” Sharad Bande, deputy licence superintendent, said, “We have been successful in seizing these dangerous chemicals used for the illegal printing business.”u00a0
