Mumbai: Man posts abusive, fat-shaming posts on woman's Facebook profile

A 32-year-old woman from Dadar has gone to the police against a man who had become aggressive and abusive while fat-shaming her on Facebook. After enduring constant harassment by Rajavel Karikalan since Thursday, the woman decided to go to the police. The man, Karikalan, who identifies himself (on Facebook) as a person originally from Salem, and currently living in Lithuania, had been fat-shaming the woman on a comment chain on a public post on the Scoop Whoop page on Facebook.

It all started with Karikalan commenting on a video featuring overweight women. He had said, "the women in the video were ugly hippos...being fat she is unpleasant to look at and at a higher risk of dying sooner. Dear fat women, YOU ARE DYING!!" His post prompted the complainant to respond on FB and call him out for his aggressive comments. She had said, "Stop calling someone ugly just because they are fat."

That triggered an avalanche of abusive comments and it was when they began to take on the form of sexual aggression that the woman decided to approach the police. Karlikaran had also posted pictures of nude, overweight women on the woman's profile page. She tweeted to the Mumbai Police and an officer from the cyber cell on Thursday itself. However, it was only on Saturday morning when she tweeted to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, that the Mumbai Police sprang into action and contacted her. "I had also tagged the abuser's sister on FB and alerted her to his posts, following which he apologised publicly on Friday evening. But, the next morning when he commented saying that he had only done it for his sister, and that his comment should not be read as an apology, I became even more determined to not give up my fight. That is when I tweeted to the PM," says the woman, who works as a branding partner with an ad agency.

Initially, the Dadar Police refused to take her complaint citing jurisdiction reasons. "When I was insistent, they advised me to go to Shivaji Park Police station. The police there cooperated with me and took down my complaint," she said. According to the Shivaji Park police, on November 16, a video about overweight women had gone viral on Facebook. A complaint has been lodged under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act for obscenity and sexual harassment. "We are in the process of collecting all objectionable material and will call the accused for questioning soon," said an officer from the Shivaji Park police station.
