In July 2011, the accused Moiz Bharmal killed his parents Nooruddin Bharmal (87) and Zubeida (83), and stayed with the corpses for two days, ate and drank beside them, and even tucked them in as if they were asleep. He fled the house only when the bodies started rotting.

Bharmal also left a note behind, in which he blamed his parents of being malicious after he lost his job as a restaurant manager, couple of months before the murders. mid-day had reported the murders, ‘Man kills parents, spends two days beside their bodies,’ July 21, 2011. He was arrested after a week.

Public prosecutor Vijay Malankar examined 17 witnesses in the case, including the sister of the accused. His sister said jewellery worth Rs 1.28 lakh was missing from the house after Bharmal fled.

The killings
MIDC police said the incident took place on intervening night of July 15 and 16 but was brought to their notice two days later, i.e on July 18, after residents of Manisha Apartments located at Church Road, Marol, Andheri (East) complained of a foul stench coming from Bharmals’ apartment.

The neighbours then called Bharmal’s sister who lives in Chennai and informed her about the development since their apartment door was locked from outside. A team of MIDC police reached the spot to find that the door was also locked from inside. The cops broke open the door of the flat and found the couple dead in the living room of their house.

Preliminary investigations at that time revealed strangulation marks on their necks and it also found that the bodies were lying in the flat for more than 48 hours.

A search of the house revealed a note written in English and signed by Bharmal. Although he has not directly claimed responsibility for the murders, the contents of the note made police suspect him. Bharmal had written that his parents were mean to him after he lost his job.

Before staying with his parents Bharmal lived in Pune with his wife and son Hussain (now 29). After his wife’s death 10 years ago, he came to stay with his parents in Andheri.

During investigations the cops came to know that Bharmal was disturbed after his wife passed away. Cops also learnt that he had planned the crime well in advance as he had asked the maid not to come to work for few days.
