Mumbai Metro Car shed: NGT slams Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), which is hearing the case related to the proposed Mumbai Metro line III car depot at Aarey Milk Colony, on Friday came down heavily on the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC).

“The Hon'ble tribunal has taken a serious note of the vilification of the petitioners which was being done by the MMRC. We are hopeful of getting justice for Aarey and our fight continues." Stalin D from NGO Vanashakti and Save Aarey Conservation group said.

One of the people from the Save Aarey Conservation Group who was present for the hearing told mid-day that the NGT has even fined MMRC Rs 5000 for harassing the petitioners and disrupting proceedings.

“NGT also said that Aarey petition is very much relevant and maintainable. The MMRC lawyer kept saying we are a publicity seeker who used 5-year-old children to protest. Their lawyer aggressively pushed for dismissal of our petition as being non-maintainable and even accused us if being publicity seekers and using children to protest. We were accused of obstructing development even after the ESZ was recognized. The judges ruled that the petition was very relevant and maintainable.” said a source.

It should be noted that the next hearing is scheduled on May 19.
