There’s blowing off steam by ticking off a bad boss, and then there’s taking the level of craziness up a notch. A bunch of housekeeping staff of an under-construction realty project in Virar, accompanied by others, allegedly beat up their supervisor and chewed his ear off after he reprimanded them for failing to complete a task. The assaulted supervisor got himself to a hospital with his mangled ear in an autorickshaw, where doctors re-attached it during a two-hour surgery.

Sources said Raj Rai (38), a resident of Bolinj, Virar, who hails from Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh, joined as a supervisor around six months ago of an under-construction real estate project of Parasnath Builders near the mega township of Global City in Virar West.

Scolded over task
Around 10.30 am on Wednesday, Rai pulled up the housekeeping staff after they failed to complete an assigned task. He then retired to his office on the premise of the construction project. Sources said a little later, some of the housekeeping staff, along with eight to 10 ‘outsiders’, ganged up in his office and thrashed him. During the melee, one of the assaulters allegedly bit Rai’s ear off. The supervisor was also bitten on an arm. The attackers then left him bleeding in his office.

Drove himself to hospital
Since no one came to his rescue, Rai himself hailed an autorickshaw and drove himself to Sanjivani Hospital, around 3 km. He reached the hospital by 11 am, but the authorities there expressed the inability to deal with the grievous injuries. They then arranged for an ambulance and took him to Arth Hospital in Nalasopara, 5-7 km away. The ambulance pulled up into the hospital around 2.15 pm. Arrangements for a operation to re-attach his ear were immediately made, but by the time the doctors began the reconstruction surgery began, it was well past 5 pm. Over the next two-and-a-half hours, the doctors managed to stitch his mangled ear back in place.

No FIR filed yet
Hospital sources said he is still recovering, and has been unable to speak much owing to the insufferable pain he is in.

The hospital has apprised the Virar police of the incident, but no police statement has been taken down as yet.
It isn’t clear if the reprimand was a one-off rebuke, or if anger amongst the employees had been festering for some time.

Rai lives in his Virar home with his wife.
