Mumbai: Power supply in suburbs affected due to problem in transmission lines

Electric supply in several parts of the suburbs has been affected due to problems in Tata Power transmission lines. According to Tata officials, this has occurred due to rains.

"Due to rains, the transmission tower is severely damaged. We will be carrying out rotational power cuts due to this," said sources in Tata Power. The problem apparently occurred at Airoli transmission tower.

The areas where there would be power cut are Vikhroli, Malad, Borivli, Versova and Mira Bhayandar among others. Power experts claim that it will take several hours for them to get the problem rectified.

The officials said that the Kalwa Salsette lines 3 and 4 bringing power from outside has been taken out of service to attend to the Tower 26 that collapsed on the evening of June 28. "Tower is likely to have fallen due to methane gas corrosion from the garbage dump at the foot of the tower and/or removal of a few structural members by elements visiting the garbage dumper," said the official.

An alternate route, instead of this transmission tower may take around five days. Couple of years ago similar problem was seen on the Kalwa - Salsette transmission lines which had led to severe power cuts.
