The incessant cries of a baby drew Vasai locals towards a tragic scene at an abandoned hovel, where they found the four-day-old boy lying next to his lifeless mother, whose head had been bashed in with a rock.

Locals followed the baby’s cry to a rundown house in the Navjivan area, where they spotted the mother and child. Police reached the spot around 5.30 pm and rescued the child, who was shifted to the Vasai-Virar municipal hospital for medical examination. Cops then sent the mother’s body for post-mortem.

Primary investigations revealed that the woman had been murdered in the morning. “We have registered a murder case and are scanning records of missing women in a similar age group to identify the deceased.

The child has been admitted in hospital and is under treatment. We are trying to trace the family and the Waliv police are conducting investigations to locate the killer,” said PSI Ranjeet Shreesat of the Vasai division.
