Mumbai: Traffic cop asks biker for personal details, gets beaten with stick

The traffic police top cop’s brainchild to collect data of all vehicles in Mumbai faced a major set back yesterday evening, when a traffic constable was brutally assaulted by a biker who did not wish to give his personal details for the data collection. The biker picked up a hard wooden stick from a petrol pump and hit the constable on his head. He was later arrested while the cop has been admitted at Lilavati hospital in a critical condition.

According to sources in the department, Joint Commissioner of Police Milind Bharambe had initiated the plan of collecting data of all vehicles in the city. For the initiative, one traffic cop will be posted at every petrol pump to collect data of all vehicles. The cop has to note the vehicle number, mobile number of the motorist or biker as well as their address.

A traffic police officer said, “Currently, good quality CCTV cameras are installed in Mumbai, especially south Mumbai. If any vehicle is seen breaking traffic rules, we will first check the number of the vehicle and send a challan directly to his or her mobile number or residential address with the data available with us.”

However, the initiative has not gone down well among several Mumbaikars, especially women, who did not wish to give such personal details to cops. On Tuesday, traffic constable Vilas Vithoba Shinde was posted at the HP petrol pump on SV Road in Khar West. He was collecting data of all vehicles. The incident took place at 4 in the evening.

A police officer said, “Shinde asked for details from a biker who was at the petrol pump. The biker was hesitant to give personal details.

The traffic constable was slightly arrogant and spoke roughly with the biker. A heated argument started between the two and the constable threatened the biker by saying that he will take him to police station.”

Enraged biker
“This enraged the biker, who started hitting the constable. There was hard wooden stick at the petrol pump. The biker picked it up and hit the constable hard on his head. The constable was down in a pool of blood while the biker fled from the spot,” the officer added.

Shinde was rushed to Lilavati hospital where he was admitted in a critical condition. He has sustained severe, deep cuts on his head. All senior police officers rushed to the petrol pump and even visited Shinde at the hospital.

A police officer from Khar police station said, “We have registered a case against the biker.” The biker has been arrested from Malwani.
