A 20-year-old man Ajay Babu Dhothre threatened to commit suicide by jumping off a 22-storey under-construction building in Chembur yesterday, after slitting the throat of a 16-year-old girl who refused his sexual advances. The girl has been admitted to a hospital and is stable (see box).

Speaking to mid-day, the 16-year-old’s uncle said, “Dhothre stays in my area and has been troubling my niece for a very long time. He used to follow her when she went to college and she had complained about this to her brother, who had confronted Dhothre and asked him to stop.”
After this went on for some time, the two families had met and Dhothre’s family had agreed to send him to his native place. But he came back on Sunday. “My niece was alone at home yesterday and her grandmother was at a neighbour’s house. Dhothre took advantage of the situation and got inside the house.
He locked the door and tried to force himself on my niece. When she resisted, he took a knife from the kitchen and slit her throat. While he was about to leave, the grandmother tried to catch hold of him, but he pushed her and fled.” The girl told family members later that Dhothre had attempted to rape her.
He then made his way up a 22-storey under-construction building, where he was accosted by site supervisor Narayan Salve. “I tried to stop him but he seemed very angry and pushed me away. I thought he was fleeing after stealing something and alerted my superiors, who informed the cops,” said Salve.
Sub-inspector Sachin More from RCF police station said, “After committing the crime, Dhothre called one of his friends and said that he would jump from the terrace of the building. The friend told us about it and we asked him to keep Dhothre engaged while we reached the spot.”
“We reached the terrace and asked the friend to go talk to Dhothre. He managed to convince Dhothre to step off the ledge and we nabbed him as soon as he did so. We have Dhothre in our custody and investigations are on,” he added.
“We have not taken the girl’s statement yet because of her condition. We will probably take it tomorrow,” said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni. The police have booked Dhothre under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code.
