The Sahar elevated road corridor which aims at providing faster connectivity between Western Express Highway and Mumbai airport's new Terminal 2 is likely to open for motorists next month.

"The construction of the elevated corridor, which will facilitate easier and quicker access to the travellers proceeding to and from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, will be open for motorists once the T2 commences operations," metropolitan commissioner UPS Madan of the state-run MMRDA said here.

The T2 is likely to start operating from February.

The 2.20km long road will enable motorists to traverse the distance of 4-5 km from the highway to CSIA in five minutes instead of the 40-45 minutes it currently takes.

The Rs 400-crore project has missed several deadlines.

"The construction of this many-faceted road faced a few impediments such as resettlement and rehabilitation of project affected families, non-availability of land from various government departments, difficulties in diverting traffic as also shifting and relaying various underground utilities. Also, construction had to be carried out only during restricted working hours owing to the close proximity of the construction site with the runway," he said.

The road will ease traffic congestion on Western Express Highway, more importantly at the Andheri-Kurla road junction, he said.
