'My neighbour shot my son'

As protests in Egypt enter its seventh day, Ida Sahaira says she has been a prisoner in her home, as she is afraid to step out and get caught in the crossfire

Egypt's revolution is on knife-edge and residents of the country are even more fearful since the protests began one week ago.

Ida Sahaira, a resident of El-Mohandaseen a place she's called home for the last 35 years said that the only emotion is of fear and anxiety.

Cooped inside her home since the protests began demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, Sahaira feels the safest place to be is inside her home.

She said, "Previously, the streets of Cairo were the safest. You could walk around alone at 1 or 2 in the morning without any fear. However, today is a very different situation. The change is shocking."

Elaborating further she explained that last Saturday, her teenage son was shot by a stray bullet, which ricocheted off his arm.

"He was accidentally shot by a neighbour. We rushed him to the nearest hospital but it took us really long to reach, as we were stopped every two metres by officials," she added.

Sahaira said that people in her neighbourhood are apprehensive, as they can do nothing. "All we can do is sit and wait. There is nothing to distract us because there is no work; no school and all the shops are closed.

We can only come out between 8 am to 3 pm because of the curfew."u00a0 Sahaira is worried but she claims that there is nothing that can change the situation.

"It is impossible to know what will happen. No one will stop until he [Mubarak] steps down, and I don't know if that will happen."

Million Man March
Egyptian protesters said they have planned a million man march today to mark one week since the start of deadly anti-government protests.
