The Polo Club in the heart of the city could well have been straight out of a high brow English gentleman's smoking club. With polished wooden banisters, rich navy carpeting and glinting mantelpieces, this open plan bar will remind you of a vintage club.

But the moment you look out, you will be transported to a lush, tropical paradise with green lawns bordered by palm trees. The Polo Club offers global drinks and cuisine on their menu to satiate the wants of expatriates, business executives and hotel guests.

We stopped by one afternoon to try out their new international menu prepared by Chef Jaydeep Patil and his team. With a focus on quality produce, the menu consists of fresh seasonal food from Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and French influences.

We started with the Mesclun Mozzarella and Almond Salad (Rs 450). Mesclun is French for an assortment of young salad leaves. This mix, originating in France, comprises lettuce, rocket, spinach, chard and mustard greens traditionally. This version had rocket, spinach and lettuce leaves.

The mozzarella was fresh, spongy and creamy and it complimented the roasted almonds and the peppery basil rocket leaves perfectly. And, unlike most imported salad greens, these were fresh and crunchy to taste. Accompanying the salad was the house specialty Apple and Basil Martini (Rs 450), served chilled with a basil garnish that was easy on the palate with a smooth minty aftertaste.

A tasting plate soon arrived of the popular Indian quick bites on the menu. The Kadak Reshmi Seekh (Rs 650) was a smoky charcoal grilled chicken and paneer skewer that was slightly overpowered by cumin flavours.

The Tawa Masala Jhinga (Rs 1000) was a hit, marinated in garam masala and fresh coriander and chargrilled to perfection. The charred outside went beautifully with the tender meat inside. The Kumb Khasta Kebab (Rs 600), a mix of mushroom, peas, herbs and spices was a little dry for our taste.

We then tried a version of the Vegetable Tempura Wrap (Rs 450) that was crunchy fried vegetables encased in a pita wrap and served with a chilli infused dressing. Although the dressing made the pita soggy, it was a good change from the standard salad sandwich.

The absolute highlight and notable pride and joy of the staff was the Croque Monsieur (Rs 550), a classic French grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Hand made black pepper brioche bread sandwiches with cured fresh ham and gruyere cheese, is fried in butter and best eaten warm. Indulgent, to say the least, is what best sums up this crisp, cheesy, warm toasted sandwich that is both delicious and filling.

To finish we cleansed our palates with a Ginger Mojito (Rs 450) that was strong with mint flavour and packed quite a punch. We also tried the non-alcoholic homemade Ginger Ale (Rs 250) and Orange Blossom (Rs 200) that were both sweet and refreshing to taste.

To sum up our drinks, the Cheese Platter (Rs 500) exhibited a great range of international cheeses that were unsullied and delectable. Included were; a musty Danish blue vein, zesty French goats cheese and an Italian al Barolo.

Any foodie buff or celebrity chef will stress on many occasions about the quality of food as "Fresh is where it's at." A perfect example of this can be found at The Polo Club, where you will dine on cuisines so global and well executed that you will forget that you are right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Bangalore.
