When I was growing up, the smartest thing my dad did was force us to read the paper. I have younger cousins who have no clue what is happening in their country, or the world.

They think that Doha, is a south Indian delicacy, Hu Jin Tao is a Thai food special and that Icelandic ash is something you smoke at a really good party.

Maybe it's not their fault, maybe it's because papers don't carry as much news as they used to. I remember a time when newsmakers made it to the paper. You needed to be a member of a party, now all you have to do is attend a party. Sit your kid down, put a paper in his hand and make him read it, then talk to him about it. That's half the battle won.
