India squash star Dipika Pallikal yesterday hailed the rising status of Indian women sportspersons in the country thanks to the star athletes like herself, tennis ace Sania Mirza and badminton queen Saina Nehwal proving to be apt role models to young women.

“Women’s sport in the country is growing really well. Girls should really take up sport and play. The thinking has changed in the country. Now, we have role models, who have done that,” said the the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games doubles gold
medal-winning player.


Arjuna and Padma Shri awardee Pallikal married former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik last year.

At Saturday’s Indian Premier League players’ auction Karthik was picked by Gujarat Lions for Rs 2.3 crore. And Pallikal said that both she and her husband were looking forward to the million-dollar franchise-based cricket extravaganza.

“This year Dinesh will play for Gujarat. I think regardless of whatever team he plays for, he will give his best. He is passionate about cricket and loves it. We are both looking forward to it,” Dipika concluded.
