One person was killed and 11 others were injured at the time this paper went to print, when suspected militants lobbed a grenade in the Paltan Bazaar area around 7.45 pm yesterday near the Assam State Transport Corporation ticket counter, police sources said.
Senior superintendent of police, Anand Prakash Tiwari, said that suspected militants lobbed a grenade in the area. “While one person was killed on the spot, 11 others were injured,” Tiwari said, adding that all the injured have been shifted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Bhawani Singh, a CRPF personnel, died on the way to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital said Kamrup (Metro) district Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotry.
Noting that it was too early to name anyone for involvement in the blast, he said investigations were on.
There were intelligence reports that militants might attempt to attack security forces, he added.
