The only Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESIS) Hospital in Navi Mumbai is in a deplorable condition with no proper facilities and no doctors. There are 4 lakh card-holding ESIS employees working in the vicinities of Thane and Belapur, and the only hospital they have near their quarters in Vashi’s Sector 5 is in a poor condition and may shut down. It is a make-shift hospital housed in a four-storey structure with several cracks.

The building where the hospital is actually supposed to be housed is under construction for the past four years. The makeshift hospital has been functioning out of the ESIS quarters for the past two years. Vaibhav Gaikwad, corporator of Vashi ward 53, has written a letter to government authorities regarding the poor conditions in the hospital in Navi Mumbai. “Five per cent is deducted from employees’ salary towards medical insurance but they are getting no benefits from it,” said Gaikwad.

“There are no proper facilities, there are no doctors, and the nurses are being transferred to different hospitals,” said an ESIS nurse who didn’t wish to be named. Gaikwad added, “One more ESIS hospital should be built in Navi Mumbai as the employees have to travel all the way to Worli’s ESIS hospital. The government is deducting the money from the employees’ salary but providing no facilities. They are being sent to other hospitals in Worli or Thane. The government should refund the money deducted or provide better facilities.”

“The makeshift hospital in the employees’ quarters has no proper facilities and is of no use. There are no doctors,” said an ESIS employee. Gaikwad added, “I have also written a letter to the health and labour minister, but have got no response. I will be meeting some MPs over this.”
