Cars and bikes have always been a passion for youngsters. But the ardour amplifies manifold when you makes your mean machine all by yourself.

Thus, students from seven engineering college in the city are on a high these days as they are giving final touches to their all terrain modest racing buggies. Besides, they are eagerly waiting for January 30 when they'll see their creations burn the tracks at Baja SAE India 2009 that will be flagged at National Automotive Testing Track at Pithampur in MP.

Like their other counterparts from across India, 25 engineering students of All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society's (AISSMS) College of Engineering too are toiling hard to simulate their automotive design and convert it into a decent 'buggi', which canu00a0 take the challenge of a four-hour endurance drive.

Called Resonance, the team is being led by Anand Iyer who claims that his team has created the lightest vehicle in the tournament. "We have used seamless tubes and alloy for chassis due to which, the vehicle is low on weight butu00a0 very strong." He added that to cut down the weight even further, they have used aluminium for firewall and flooring.

Iyer, who was the unanimous choice of the group to handle the steering, has participated in a couple of similar rallies, "We divided ourselves in five groups and each group was assigned different tasks. It includes suspension, breaking, steering, chassis, electrical and the final drive." Taking about finance, Iyer said, "Though the world is facing economic crisis, our marketing team did a wonderful job and earned a sponsorship from FIAT India and Pier Burg India."

While Debashis Biswas, the vice captain of the team, said, "The feeling of creating a vehicle on our own and that too in our 20s is great and will remain with each one of us for ever." He added that after Baja SAE India, the group aims to go International by participating in International FSAE and Asia 2010.

About Baja SAE India

THIS IS a competition that simulates real-world engineering challenges. Students, as a team, are tasked to design, build, test, promote and race an off-road vehicle that can survive the rough terrains.

This is the second consecutive year of this intercollegiate event, which is popularly referred to as Indian Baja on the tracks of International Baja, which consists of three regional competitions in the USA, and competitions in South Africa, Mexico, Brazil and Korea.

Here, each participating team is provided with 340 CC air-cooled 4s engine and seat belts and are challenged to create and race all terrain one seater vehicle.
