Panel to be formed to improve cadaver donation scenario
In a bid to improve the organ donation scenario in the city, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has decided to formally register a body to oversee cadaver donations.
Cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, among others, have a body known as the Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Committee (ZTCC) that oversees organ donations and also works towards promoting more number of donors and member hospitals.
"Though there is a ZTCC in Pune as well, it is not registered, which hampers a lot of official work and slows down the pace of work. Organ donation in the city is quite low compared with elsewhere. That's why, to give it a boost, we are moving towards a permanent registered body," said Dr Pravin Shengare, joint director of DMER.
The elected members of the local ZTCC will co-ordinate with member hospitals and bring out various programmes to boost organ donation.
Currently about four cadaveric organ donations take place in the city on an annual basis as compared to a waiting list of over 280 patients for kidney donations. This means a wait of almost 70 years for any new entry to the existing list of patients.
