Sukhwinder Singh discusses his 'single' status and upcoming collaboration with AR Rahman. In this tete-a-tete, he talks about working on Rangoon and his independent projects

I was being selective about film songs in the last few years because I am not comfortable with the excessive use of auto-tuner in music making," says Sukhwinder Singh (45), who kicked off 2017 with hit songs like Udi Udi Jaaye (Raees), O Re Rangreza (Jolly LLB 2), Tippa and Chori Chori (Rangoon). He says he has recorded several tracks over the last couple of months after successfully convincing music directors to use his raw voice.

"The [auto-tuner] technology was adopted from the West for occasional use, but it became integral for most composers, except Vishal Bhardwaj and AR Rahman," he explains. Elaborating how his natural style of singing helps him, Sukhwinder says, "I recorded Udi Udi Jaaye with Ram Sampath in just 20 minutes. I have also started working with newer composers."
In this tete-a-tete, he talks about working on Rangoon and his independent projects.
How was the experience of working with Vishal Bhardwaj in Rangoon?
I recorded the title song of Rangoon six years ago. I have seen Rahman listen to Vishal's tracks while travelling in his car across Chennai. He is also a fan of Vishal's work. Rahman and Vishal have one thing in common — both are brilliant with orchestration and composition. Vishal's way of making music is very international. He loves taking on a challenge. Music is integral to Rangoon, and I am sure when the songs will be seen on screen, they will seem as if a painter created them.
Tell us about your upcoming film songs.
I have recorded songs for Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laddoo Deewana. I am working with Rahman for a Boney Kapoor movie, and with young composer Vishal Mishra for a Mahesh Manjrekar film.
Any indie projects in the pipeline?
I am working with Rahman on a single, which I recorded with students from his academy.
It should release by April. I have also conceptualised a series of 16 music videos that will release digitally around the same time. It will feature a bunch of singers, popular and new.
Do you plan to get married in the near future?
I want to get married this year. Whenever I meet Rahman, he spends the first 30 minutes convincing me to get married. My mom also wants me to find a life partner.
