Railway official justifies decision saying the railways was feeding passengers too much!
Eating on the Rajdhani Express won't be the same, as the Indian Railways has cut down on the food items served on the train since March 1. The revised menu (see below) is also applicable on the August Kranti and Shatabdi Express. "The board has cut down on food items on a trial basis for six months," said R D Sharma, group general manager, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
"The prices had not been revised since 1998. We cut down on the menu because we felt we were feeding too much to passengers," said an official from the tourism and catering department. The IRCTC which supplies food on trains wanted its share increased by 20 to 30 per cent, but the Railway board refused. The IRCTC gets
Rs 132 (Rs 52 for dinner, Rs 40 for tea and Rs 40 for breakfast) from the first and second AC tickets that cost Rs 2,100 and Rs 1,450 respectively.
The authorities are flooded with complaints from angry passengers. Vandana Sharma, who has been travelling on the Rajdhani for 12 years, said, "I cannot eat dal-rice while travelling, but I had no choice this time, as they've stopped serving continental food. They've begun giving idli without sambar instead of bread and butter."u00a0
Sandeep Chopra said, "Many foreigners travel on these trains. They charge us for food and leave us with no option to protest."
