Recipe for success

Whether it is for coffee and conversation or for a memorable meal, these hangouts suit everyone's palate and pocket

Mainland China
If it's delicious Chinese food you're looking for, then Mainland China should be your pit stop. The restaurant interiors are chic (mercifully, no paper dragon or red lanterns). The menu pays tribute to dishes from different provinces of China. Drunken chicken in Shaoxiang wine, Mamtao bunse or diced chicken breast marinated and sautu00c3u00a9ed in barbecue sauce, Crispy vegetables Beijing style are some of the unusual dishes on offer.

At: No. 14, Church Street. Ph: 2559 7722 / 6537 4579. Meal for two: Rs 1000.

Owner Anjan Chatterjee says, "We are extremely delighted that we have been awarded the MiD DAY award. Recognition is important. Since the time we opened in 1997, we have received love and respect from our patrons. It is our constant endeavour to provide the best. We innovate our menu and add new dishes every few months and during festivals."

Coconut Grove
When this restaurant opened 20 years ago, it was a novelty in every sense of the word. The uniforms of the waiters who flaunted their mundus, the potted palms, the gloriously cooked seafood and the frothy beer quickly gained a fan following among foodies. The appams and the chicken stew, the meen pappas, the nadan chemeen curry are all winners. The thali is probably the best option for vegetarians. A must-try is the piping hot pineapple halwa that comes with vanilla ice cream. Purists are known to discard the ice cream and savour the halwa.

Owner Raju Thomas says, "We are an established brand when it comes to specialty food. It feels great to win an award in the regional specialty restaurant category."

At: 86, Spencers Building, Church Street. Ph: 2559 6149. Meal for two: Rs 800.

Mocha
Mocha has two outlets one on Lavelle Road and the other in Koramangala. The interiors are inviting. There are couches strewn with colourful cushions and bright bolsters.

On the menu is a wide range of hot, cold and exotic coffee and tea. Soups, salads, pasta, lasagna, sandwiches, desserts and shakes are also on offer. Try the Curried Washington Apple Soup and Asian wok tossed salad. The pasta menu has penne/spaghetti with vegetables, roast chicken, pesto cream laced mushrooms and fruit-flavoured hookahs. The desserts like rich tiramisu, chocolate avalanche, Philadelphia cream cheese cakes and gooey fudge are sinfully rich.

Ritika Sadhwani, who is a partner at the Lavelle Road branch of Mocha, says, "We wanted to provide a unique hangout in Bangalore, so we created an inviting ambience and great food. It's great to know that we are the winners in the coffee lounge bar category."
