Rs 2 crore looted in twin robberies in Mumbai

Two back-to-back incidents of robbery are giving sleepless nights to the police in the Western Suburbs. While the first theft of jewllery worth Rs 1.5 crore plus Rs 3 lakh cash was reported from Meghwadi, Andheri (East), Rs 50 lakh was stolen from a Bandra residence — both took place last week. But, it’s the similarity in the modus operandi that has cops wondering if there’s a single gang behind the crimes.

Twin incidents
According to police sources, in both the cases, the robbers attacked when the owners were away from their homes, and their main target was gold and diamond jewellery. According to Meghwadi police sources, Andheri (East) resident Amardeep Bindra registered an FIR on Sunday. In his complaint, Amardeep, proprietor of Bindra Constructions, said, he was out attending a family function when the robbery took place.

A police official said, “Gold jewellery worth R1.50 crore and R3 lakh cash was stolen from the Bindras. They were taken aback because only three rooms of their 6-BHK bungalow were looted and because that was where they stored their jewellery, we suspect the work of an insider.”

In the meantime, four servants of the house, who reside on the bungalow premises, have been detained for questioning. While two of them have been working for the family for the last 25 years, the remaining two joined them just six months ago.

Broke in through window
In the Bandra robbery, police said the home of a 65 year-old woman was looted while she was visiting a relative’s place in Khar.

The woman, who lives alone, wrote in her complaint that the robbers broke in through the window and stole gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh.
