Festival or no festival, rules are rules, says the city police. But some people beg to differ and think the cops are a bit lenient on such days.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Praveen Sood says that people have to follow rules for safety reasons. "And we have to do our job even on festival days."

But traffic constable Shiva Kumar, who's out there on the field, says, "There is nou00a0 relaxation of traffic rules during festivals. Sometimes, when there are more than two people on a bike, especially a family, we don't take it so seriously since they are often going to a religious place to offer prayers. But that doesn't mean we don't book cases on festival days," he said.

Two-wheeler rider Abdul Gafoor agrees. "I think traffic police are lenient on festival days. Whenever I go to pray on such days I don't wear a helmet and take my two brothers on my bike. I have never been caught even once though there are police personnel outside the mosque, controlling traffic. I have seen many riders without helmets and with more than one pillion rider on festival days."

Another rider Hari Prasad says he's been lucky even on normal days. "I usually don't wear a helmet while riding.

I put it on the petrol tank or hang it on my hand and wear it only when I see a cop at a signal. I have escaped several times from the traffic police though I have paid fine a couple of times. I was lucky twice when I was caught without a helmet but let off only with a warning."
