Saina Nehwal got a step closer to defending her Singapore Open Super Series crown after beating China's Lu Lan 21-18, 13-21, 21-16 in their opening round match yesterday.

Nehwal slumped in the second game but managed to recover and register a three-game victory over Lan in 56 minutes.

The World No 4 Indianu00a0 faces Chinese Taipei's Shao Chieh Cheng in the second round today.

Meanwhile, compatriot P Kashyap lost to World No 8 Sung Hwan Park in the men's singles opening round.

India's Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas also ended up on the losing side.

They lost 17-21, 16-21 to Hiroyuki Endo and Kenichi Hayakawa of Japan in 36 minutes.
