Samantha Stosur has become the first Australian woman to win a grand slam singles title in 31 years after pulling off a stunning upset over Serena Williams in the US Open final. Stosur produced the match of her life to beat Serena 6-2, 6-3, in an hour and 13 minutes at New York's Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The win makes Stosur her country's first female Grand Slam champion since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won Wimbledon in 1980 and the first Australian woman to win the US Open women's singles crown since Margaret Court Smith in 1973. Lleyton Hewitt, who won the Wimbledon in 2002, was the last Australian to win a grand slam title. "Ever since I started playing ... this was a dream of mine to be here one day," Fox Sports quoted Stosur, as saying after the match. "I don't really know what to say," she added.
