After sending desperate SMSes to Mumbaikars to use the BWSL, toll agency may slash one-way rates by 20 per cent during non-peak hours on weekdays

It promised a lot, but didn't find many takers. The Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) that offers a smooth ride in just seven minutes witnesses only 26,000 vehicles every day, 14,000 less than the projected figure.

As a result, Mumbai Entry Point Limited (MEPL), the toll agency on BWSL, has decided to offer discounts to motorists during non-peak hours on weekdays.

Although the exact amount has not been finalised, sources said the MEPL is proposing a 20 per cent discount on the one-way Rs 50 toll.

So, we have decided to offer discounts and forwarded the proposal to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

People can avail of the discounts once we get an approval from MSRDC."

The MEPL is under a one-year contract with MSRDC. He added, "If we attract more people during non-peak hours, we can earn more revenue."

Last month, the MEPL had sent SMSes to commuters about the benefits of using the BWSL.

However, the toll charges will remain the same on Sundays.

"The BWSL attracts 35,000 vehicles on Sundays, as people come with their families to enjoy the ride," said Mhaiskar. There won't be any change in the cost of monthly passes either.

The BWSL managed to sell 250 monthly passes in the first week and a month later, only 270 passes have been sold.

Rs 60 crore
MEPL's estimated earnings (annually) from BWSL toll

Rs 90 crore
MEPL's expected target (annually) from BWSL toll
