Chief Minister decides not to upset woman friend who can't see anybody else get close to him

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who was caught between two women when he wanted to make film star Tara the BJP nominee for a Legislative Council seat against old friend Shobha Karandlaje's wishes, has finally decided not to defy the woman who has stood by him for long.

While Shobha had the last laugh in the game, Tara was sulking after she found her name missing in the list of nominations for the council.

The government sent a list of three names yesterday for the Governor's approval, and comedian-turned-politician Jaggesh pipped glam doll Tara to the post. Governor H R Bharadwaj cleared the names of Krishna Bhat and Jaggesh, but rejected V Somanna on technical grounds.

Even as Tara's proximity to Yeddyurappa was providing fodder for the media of late, the CM had hinted her name would be in the council nomination list.

This had irked Shobha, a former minister who has a history of not allowing any other wmen near Yeddyurappa, and she did everything possible to scuttle the chances of the actress.

'Madam has yet again proved that Yeddyurappa will not cross the line dawn by her," said a source close to Shobha. "Despite a strong lobby, Tara could not get what she wanted."

Raghavendra is understood to have assured Tara of making her an member of the Legislative Council, but Yeddyurappa toed Shobha's line finally, though he too had a soft corner for Tara.

"CM's family members are trying to establish a force against Shobha and Raghavendra supporting Tara was a part of the strategy," said the source.

A disappointed Tara said, "I think I have the blessings of the CM and it is enough for me. He is my leader and I will continue to follow him."

She said a fellow artiste was nominated for the council, while she had ample opportunity to serve her party even without a political power.

"I feel sorry for her, but I and Tara could not be there simultaneously at the council as we are from the same field," said a beaming Jaggesh. "It is my privilege to enter the upper house after I resigned as a Congress MLA to join BJP a year and half ago."
