Pre-monsoon rains bring mercury down by eight notches to 26 Celsius, MET says monsoon to keep its June 10 date with the city

Happy showers drenched the sweating city to its skin yesterday evening, bringing down the mercury by eight notches to 26 Celsius and setting the stage for the onset of monsoon.

The Meteorological Department (MET) confirmed yesterday's showers were a precursor to monsoon.
"It will take a week before monsoon hits the city," said a MET official.

"Pre-monsoon showers are taking place because of rising temperatures. This is a normal phenomenon during this time of the year," said V K Rajiv, director MET.

Armed with latest equipment, including recently installed Doppler radar, the MET department has been able to predict a date for the onset of monsoon.

"The clouds have moved beyond 11 degree North latitude. They have advanced till Karnataka as per today's forecast," said another MET official.

Sporadic rainfall was experienced from Worli to Colaba in the afternoon of May 31, too. "Proper rainfall will be experienced after June 10 and pre-monsoon showers will be experienced till then.

The clouds are moving towards Mumbai from the south.

Also the Doppler radar, bought into effect from this year, has helped us to detect clouds that assist in predicting rainfall," said RV Sharma, deputy director at the Mumbai weather bureau.

Pre-monsoon shower also brought down humidity to 64 per cent from last week's 75 per cent. According to MET department, the coming week will witness cloudy or sunny mornings.

The nights will be windy and occasional thunderstorms may be experienced. Temperature is estimated to fluctuate between 36.5 and 29 Celsius.

Trains delayed
If the happy showers brought smiles on the faces of sweating commuters in packed local trains, it also left them stranded for around 40 minutes at different stations.

"The trains are running late by 20-40 minutes due to some technical problems which developed after the showers.

It is a general phenomenon experienced during monsoon season," said AK Singh, PRO of Central Railway.
There was no alert for bus, train commuters or people residing in low-lying areas.
