Siachen martyr's mortal remains reaches Pune

Pune: The mortal remains of Sepoy Sunil V Suryawanshi, one of the soldiers who died after being buried under an avalanche that hit an Army camp on the Siachen Glacier, was brought to Pune's War Memorial on Monday.


Sepoy Nursing Assistant Suryawanshi was among the 10 soldiers of the 19 Madras Regiment who were trapped and killed by a massive avalanche at the world's highest battlefield of Siachen Glacier on February 3. The Army declared that they were dead on February 5.

25-year-old Suryawanshi, who hails from Maskarwadi village in Mand in Satara, was originally from the Army Medical Corps (AMC).

The mortal remains of the nine soldiers reached their hometowns on Monday because of delay in transporting them from Siachen due to poor weather condition. A week after the body was airlifted, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the National War Memorial, Pune as Suryawanshi mortal remains reached Pune by a special aircraft on way to his native place.

After the ceremony, the mortal remains were sent forward to his hometown and were likely to reach the village on Tuesday morning. The last rites have been also been scheduled on the same day.

Suryawanshi was born on May 25, 1991 at Village Maskarwadi of Maharashtra's Satara district. After finishing his school from Dahiwadi College with good marks in science subjects, Suryawanshi opted to join the Indian Army, and were selected as a Nursing Assistant in Army Medical Corps on September 30, 2010.

Suryawanshi completed his basic training from Army Medical Corps Center and College on April 9, 2011, and got his first posting at Command Hospital, Eastern Command, to finish class III trade test. After that, he joined 410 Field Hospital on permanent posting on June 29, 2013.

Sepoy Suryavanshi was a soft spoken, social person and was liked by all members of the unit for his cheerful nature. He used to take a part in various organised games and took pro-active part in various extra-curricular in the unit.

The soldier has survived by his wife Rekha, one year daughter Tanvi and parents.
