As you approach the Elephant Camp at Dubare, on the banks of the Kaveri River,u00a0 in Karnataka's Western Ghats, the sight of an elephant trunk salute makes for royal welcome. This river island is home to an elephant camp, a project undertaken by the State Forest Department.
It serves as a perfect getaway for the wildlife enthusiast. The resident elephants are its star attractions, who have been either rescued or abandoned and are trained under naturalists.
The highlight is the morning bathing ritual. These gentle giants are at ease with all the human attention and enjoy their regal bath in the calm waters for hours at end. This can be a great way to introduce kids to animals and remove any fear towards them.
Like a scene out of a National Geographic documentary, man and animal bond in perfect harmony. A trained naturalist takes visitors around to explain aspects of elephant history, ecology and biology. Overnight guests and day visitors can visit. The camp is 30 kms from Madikeri.
