Udayachal High School (Vikhroli) won the girls U-14 Mumbai Schools Sports Association-Mumbai Indians inter-school volleyball title at Azad Maidan yesterday.
Making their debut in the competition, the Vikhroli school comfortably beat last year’s runner-up Children’s Academy (Malad) 25-14, 25-20 in the final.
Dhanashree Raorane with 10 points and Anushree Nair (eight points) were the top scorers for Udayachal. The Vikhroli school may be a first-timer in the MSSA tournament, but they are no pushovers in the sport, considering they recently finished runner-up in the District Sports Office (DSO) tournament.
“We were unable to participate in the earlier editions of the MSSA tournament as the dates clashed with our school’s annual function. This being our first time, we managed to field just the girl’s U-14 team. We were unable to get the U-16 team as it comprises Class 10 students and they have their preliminary exams in January,” Udayachal’s physical education teacher Ishwari Chavan told MiD DAY.
“We played a very fast game. The opposition was strong, but they made some silly errors and that cost them the match. Also, as we are a new team, so I think they took us lightly and this worked in our favour,” said 12-year-old Anushree.
