Sonia Gandhi believes in austerity, but her Wednesday evening march to the Prime Minister's residence was not planned. According to sources, as traffic came to a standstill in the Capital due to Chinese premier Wen Jiabao's visit, the Congress president was also caught off guard.

Sonia was travelling in her personal car with some security guards to the Prime Minister's house for a royal dinner hosted for Wen Jiabao. But zealous security personnel following protocol made sure that she had to cover the last few hundred metres on foot.

In order to ensure tight security all vehicles were being stopped for security checks. Sonia Gandhi who was coming in her personal car from her residence at Akhbar Road was also stopped at the Safdurjung traffic light, which was barricaded.u00a0

As through out the day there were protests all across the city by Tibetans, so even her car was stopped. The Chinese premier reached first at the Prime Minster's house. Sonia Gandhi arrived later. Due to SPG miscommunication she had to travel some distance on foot," said a highly-placed source.
