Star Trek - Movies Reviews

What's it about: Even if you haven't heard of the USS Enterprise, or are unfamiliar with the name Captain Spock, Star Trek is an experience that you must have.

Personally, I am not too familiar with the franchise, but JJ Abram's big screen adaptation of the classic TV series left me wanting to YouTube every episode of the show. Taking us back to where it all began, the film opens with a bang.

Captain George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) is about to self destruct himself to save his battle ship from the hands of a revenge-obsessed Romulan captain named Nero (Bana).
u00a0
He ends up saving the lives of 800 innocent men, including his wife and newborn son. Flash forward to a few years we see young James Kirk (Pine) as a rebel, somewhat of an antidote to everything his father stood for.

Kirk's radical ideasu00a0 make him a miscast as a service men for the Enterprise thereby instigating instant rivalry between his fellow batch mate Spock (Quinto).

We get a first-hand glimpse of the famous Spock-Kirk duel as they battle time and later join hands to save the Enterprise and their Federation.

What's hot: Talk about perfect casting! J J Abrams (TV series, Lost director) gets to captain a ship of actors that not only suit their parts like hands in gloves, but make gold of whatever material they are given. Both Pine and Quinto are stellar in their roles as Kirk and Spock.

Kirk's first line after his first unpleasant experience with Spock is, "Who's that pointy eared bastard?". Abrams decides to have fun with the script and thereby, not making it humbug and dreary but enjoyable and rivetting.

The special effects have raised the bar for the summer blockbusters to follow. The Battle sequences are engaging and spectacular. Keep a close look out for Leonard Nimoy who makes a cameo as the older Spock, a certain treat for diehard fans.u00a0

What's not: Bana's casting as the evil Nero may raise a few eyebrows. Not that he's a bad actor, but he somehow doesn't seem to translate the evil his character is meant to embody.
u00a0
There's a lot of drama as the story unfolds, to theu00a0 extent of becoming soap operatic.u00a0

What to do: Fasten that seat belt and enjoy this ride. Star Trek is definitely an experience you don't want to miss!
