The enthusiasm for voting, which hit a new high before the Lok Sabha elections, is showing no signs of waning. While the LS polls saw the addition of 40 lakh new voters during a special drive for the revision of electoral rolls, a similar drive conducted last month for the upcoming state assembly elections has added 19.75 lakh new voters.

In Mumbai’s 36 assembly constituencies alone, 1.85 lakh new residents have registered their names in the voters’ list. The trend is upward and encouraging, say officials from the state branch of the Election Commission (EC).

The EC had deputed a special team to supervise the revision of voters’ lists last month following complaints of deletion of names during Lok Sabha polling across the state. The EC team verified the complaints and even asked its state wing to send an appeal to voters through speed post to intimate them about the local offices to contact for verification.

A large amount of money was spent on the drive to remove any doubts. The letters were sent to voters who were not available on the addresses provided by them during the door-to-door campaign, said an official. By the Lok Sabha elections, the state had 8,06,16,162 voters and now, after the drive, the number has gone up to 8,25,91,826.

In the city’s vicinity, Panvel has seen an addition of 45,986 new voters, the Nalasopara assembly seat from the new Palghar district has 46,162 new voters, Mira-Bhayander has 29,856 and Kalyan Rural has 23,015.
