Two students from Orissa have been caught peddling marijuana worth around Rs 1 lakh, helping police get clues to a drug syndicate operating from that state.

Acting on a tip-off, Cubbon Park police nabbed Rathikanth (24), holder of a diploma in business administration, and Srikanth (22), a BSc student from Ganjam district, Orissa, near Anil Kumble Circle. The duo confessed that they get Rs 10,000 for delivering the drugs.

Modus operandi

Preliminary investigations reveal that drug-peddlers use students and lorry drivers as couriers since they travel to Bangalore frequently and are familiar with the topography.

Big business

According to the police, many farmers and landlords in Orissa, Bihar and Rajasthan cultivate poppy after obtaining a licence from the drug control board. The poppy is meant for medical purposes only and is to be sold only to the government.

However, 90 per cent of cultivators grow poppy beyond the permissible limit and peddle them to various parts of the country.
