To make science an enriching experience for children, Zee Learn Gakken Science Academy organised a seminar called Science and Spirit of Inquiry last week.

The academy recently launched a programme in which it teaches students how to study science in the
Japanese format.

"What is the first thing that comes to your mind when I say Japan? Science and technology?" said Girish Nagpal, National Sales Head, Zee Learn Limited. "In spite of having some of the greatest minds and such a large population, we are lingering behind when its comes to innovation."

The academy aims to tie-up with various schools and teach children innovation. The academy wants to change the attitude of children so that they start asking why and how when they observe things around them.

"According to scientific research, it has been pointed out that whatever we do, practically 90 per cent is retained in the brain, but whatever we read only 10 per cent is retained in our brain. For students, it will be learning by doing. Students will individually explore on their own," said Nagpal.

Hirofumi Yumoto, Head of Research and Development, Gakken Educational Co, is a known TV personality in Japan.

Yumoto demonstrated the experiments during the seminar. A gramophone recorder made out of a paper cup, the floating ball experiment put to life, the crosscopter, all these held the audience spellbound.

The programme is available for students of Std III to VIII.
